Reference is invited to Treasury Letter No. 2, 40550 of the 12th of September, 1939.
Expenditure on re-equipment in excess of the present provision (£825,000) may be required, and, in addition, the expenditure of £25,000 on an Armoured Car Unit in Kenya has been approved, It may no however, be possible to effect delivery of all the equipment in question during the current financial year, and in that case provision for the excess would not be required to be made until 1940/41.
The provision is in any event repayable over a period of years by the Governments of the Dependencies concerned,
The Colonial Government is being asked to consider whether this charge could be met from Colonial funds during the period of the war.
It is hoped to effect a reduction in travelling and incidental expenses.
The future of this Department is under consideration.
It is proposed to suspend any purchases of new instruments.
The work of the Board has been suspended for the duration of the war, and the staff has been transferred to the Ministry of Econquio Warfare. It is expected that the nistry will accept responsibility for the salaries of certain of the staff.
